THIS IS A SHOW THAT’S BINGE WORTHY!
Last year we hosted our first tours that were focused on the “Eagle Show” and they were in high demand. This year, we have secured a larger zodiac but as with last year, each trip is limited to only 8 participants giving photographers more space. This year we have also added an extra hour to give us more time to look for whales and other sea mammals!
Haven’t heard about the Eagle Show or understand why it has been so popular? Picture hundreds of Bald Eagles gathering in one area for just a couple of hours on certain days of the year. Narrow ocean channels funnel tide changes as high as 5 meters (16 feet). This push of such a large volume of water over just a few hours causes turbulent ocean rapids – some of the fastest moving ocean water on the planet! Small fish called Hake, get caught in the whirlpools and they float to the ocean’s surface unable to swim. The Eagles have figured out the schedule and they start arriving before it even starts. Perched in the trees patiently waiting, it suddenly happens! The currents pick up, the Hake float to the surface and the Eagles take their turn fishing; we have witnessed many days where over 300 eagles are present with over 100 hunting at the same time. It’s also not uncommon to see them eat the fish mid-air; sometimes even upside down!
The Hake migration only happens for a few months each year and finding the right days where the water is running fast at times where light is good is limited. The feeding frenzy usually only lasts about 2 hours and we have picked dates where the water is running hard and the light is expected to be favourable.
The large numbers below indicates number of spots still available for that specific tour.

BOAT CHARTER:
* INQUIRIES, REGISTRATION & PAYMENT ARE MADE THROUGH COASTAL WORKSHOPS.COM *
Coastal Workshops is chartering the boat from Wild Waterways. Any questions about the tour should be directed to Coastal Workshops.
In addition to the Coastal Workshops Waiver that you will sign online when you register, the boat charter company may also require you sign their waiver. Acceptance of waivers are a requirement to particpate and no refund will be offered if there is a refusal to sign.
*** PLEASE SEE THE NEXT TAB DOWN FOR A MAP TO WILD WATERWAYS. WE WILL DEPART FROM A NEW LOCATION THIS YEAR***
ARRIVAL TIME & BOAT DEPARTURE:
Guests are required to arrive a minimum of 30 minutes prior to tour start time. This allows us time to get everyone checked in, fitted with a floatation survival suit that will be worn while on the boat and to provide the required Transport Canada safety briefing.
Our goal is to be off the dock on time and we will be unable to wait for late arrivals. If you are doing more than one Eagle Show tour with us, remembering your suit size can expedite the process on your next trip.
SURVIVAL SUITS:
Insurance regulations require that all guests, with the exception of small children/infants, must wear Survival Suits at all times while on the boat. Suits must be fully zipped when the vessel is travelling at speed. At their discretion, the boat charter company may have a policy where suits can be unzipped and/or the upper portion lowered while stopped or at lower travel speeds. It should be assumed that suits remain fully secured at all times unless instructed otherwise.
THINGS TO BRING:
✅ Gloves, toque and extra layer of warm clothing – morning and evenings can be cool on the water combined with speed of the boat traveling at 50 kph.
❌ Ball caps are not recommended as they often blow off.
✅ Closed toe shoes.
❌ No open toe sandals or flipflops.
✅ Sunglasses or goggles to protect eyes when traveling at full speed.
✅ Extra water.
✅ Snacks and beverages will be provided on the tour.
CAMERA GEAR:
✅ Zoom lens with a range from 100mm and up works well. Stan and Stuart use 100-400mm lens on tours and often with a 1.4x extender
✅ Zoom lenses with a reach of 500 or 600mm also work really well
❌ Large prime lenses (500 & 600mm) may prove to be difficult. Two or three people will be sharing a bench seat and space needed for large primes maybe limited. Tripods and monopods are also not permitted and having the ability to zoom is crucial for photographing the eagles.
✅ Bring extra batteries and lots of memory card space. Capturing the eagles fishing can be challenging, the action can be non-stop and you can expect that you will take lots of photos. Also ensure that you know how to enable your camera’s fastest Burst Mode – high frames per second will be your best friend on this trip!
✅ Stan and Stuart use regular padded camera bags on tours. There will be room under the seats to store a pack. Although we are out during one of the driest months and when waters tend to be calmer, dry sacks can also be used depending on your comfort level.
